Last Sunday, my neighborhood celebrated the annual “Westcott Street Cultural Fair.” Westcott Street is just to the east of the university, and is made up of long-time residents, immigrants, and students. It’s very much a multicultural area, the main square area includes several restaurants including a middle-eastern, Greek, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, and a diner.
Syracuse holds several specific cultural fairs during the fall including Irish and Italian festivals, for example. Westcott is a little different, the community calls it a fair for everyone. They open up the parade for anyone wishing to march, and they have concert stages for all kinds of music: jazz, country, rock, and ethnic beats to name a few.
The most intriguing thing you’ll find on Westcott is an old movie house turned concert venue. They have live music almost every night of the week. Some bands are local, and many others come from across the country including notable bands like OK Go.
Living on Westcott has been a treat, life is never boring here. The fair is an extension of the life of this community, and its uniqueness.
